"Control Charts & Paper Clips"
Speaker:
Jim Oxenrider
Advanced Quality Planning
General Motors
Fort Wayne, IN

About the Program:
Jim Oxenrider presented a paper at the 2001 AQC conference entitled "Teaching Control Charts using Student Generated Variable Data".  Jim's address to our section will be based on this paper.  More information can be found on the Quality Station web site.  Visitors are welcome to download the PowerPoint presentation and use paper clips (linear dry pulp tension retainers) to teach quality concepts.
As a Pre-clinic, Jim will run an exercise to teach how to plot and interpret a control chart.  After dinner, Jim will explore a method to teach others in their organization various advanced quality planning tools including: control charts, flow diagrams, FMEA, control plans, operator instructions, and MSA.
One thing that Jim found is that many people do not understand the "language" of quality.  Given that, how could they understand quality concepts like variation?
The exercise is targeted at normal factory folks and has been used with a
variety of people from sixth graders to plant managers.  Math skills are not
necessary. Understanding is.

About our Speaker:
Jim Oxenrider has been affiliated with the automotive industry for more than 34 years.  He currently works in advanced quality planning at the General Motors facility in Marion IN.  Oxenrider has a B.A. from Capital University and and MBA from Indiana Wesleyan University.  He also is a ASQ certified quality manager and certified quality engineer.

Follow-up:
Twenty-three quality professionals and two guests attended the October meeting.  Dick Elias, Bill Haas and Joe Lamirand won doorprizes while Steve Zylka won a free meal.  Gary Stoner's name was drawn for the $150 jackpot but unfortunately did not attend.

Take-aways:

The "paper clip" process is simple but can be used to demonstrate ant teach all the QS9000 quality concepts.  Unlike other exercises, like Demming's red bead, the students gain ownership because they actually do something that affects the measurement results.  The paper clips vary in length from color to color and within color.  Students display differing abilities to straighten paper clips.  Jim presented at the AQC because the concept is so neat that it has to be shared.

Thanks Jim for a great program.
