"The Future of Automotive Quality Systems"

David K. Watkins
President
Omnex Corporation

About the Program:

What is the future of automotive sector-specific quality management system (QMS) requirements? And what should your organization do to plan for a transition you should seriously consider making in 2002?  In essence, the challenge for QS-9000-registered companies will be to implement within their organizations methodologies to help them become customer- and process-focused.
The key question then is: What steps should QS-9000 registered companies take to implement TS 16949:2002?   Omnex President Dave Watkins covers techniques for making the transition as smooth and effective as possible.  Discussions include Process mapping, Gap Analysis, BOS, Process Review, and customer focus.  He will discuss the pitfalls and his suggestions for overcoming them.

About our Speaker:
As   president   of  Omenx Inc.,  Dave  Watkins'  experience  encompasses  complete profit-and-loss  responsibility  in  manufacturing, production, and distribution management  in  custom-molded  thermosets  and thermosetting materials, chemical processing, metal forming, and man-made fibers.
He  has  provided training and consulting services internationally, primarily to  senior  and  executive management groups, in the strategic implementation of integrated  management systems architectures incorporating QS-9000/TS 16949, ISO9001:2000,  QOS/BOS,  balanced  scorecard,  APQP,  lean  enterprise systems, and theory of constraints.
Having  pioneered  the  application of these approaches in non-manufacturing companies,  Watkins  has  developed  or co-developed most of Omnex's classes for service  companies, including ISO 9000 for Service, Advance Quality Planning for Service,  and  QOS for Service. He has trained most of Ford's STAs, both service and manufacturing, in ISO 9000, QOS, and APQP.
His  education  includes  a  bachelor's  degree  from  Widener University and numerous  professional  courses. Watkins served on the board of directors of the Illinois  Manufacturers'  Association,  as  a  trustee  for  the IMA's education foundation,   and   as  a  trustee  for  the  Northeastern  Illinois  University Foundation.

Pre-Clinic:
Mike McDonald will present a 20 minute pre-clinic entitled  "Process Sampling using the Quincunx Process Simulator."

Post-Meeting Follow-up:

Chad Kymal, CEO, Omnex Corporation was scheduled to speak at our January Meeting.  Chad was tied up on business in California and sent David Watkins as his replacement.  Dave was an excellent replacement and gave a clear and concise overview of the new ISO 9000:2000 standard and TS16949, the QS9000 replacement that is built upon the new ISO standard.

Twenty-four quality professionals attend the January meeting.  Mike McDonald presented a pre-clinic and demonstrated the interaction between specifications and variability using a Quincunx Process Simulator.  More information is available on his company's web site at www.MLMcData.com.

Door prizes were won by Steve Young, Jim Migoski, Vicki Storer and Winston Lovelace.  Chuck McPherson won a free meal.  Tonya Redd's name was pulled for the $150 jackpot - but she was not at the meeting.  You must attend to win the jackpot.

Mike Chenoweth announced that our Fall CQA course was a success.  All six who took the course passed the CQA exam.
