February 2006 Membership Meeting Wednesday, February 15, 2006
About the Program: Main Presentation - Analytical Laboratory – Tour and ExamplesA power point tour of the Tawas laboratory will acquaint all regarding the extensive skills and equipment needed to do contract analytical laboratory work. Several examples will be given to better explain the equipment and its capabilities. It will be shown how quality, standards, and proven procedures are essential to giving the correct data to customers. About our speaker: Dave has been involved in analytical
laboratories for over 30 years in various capacities. He retired from Delphi
Automotive in 2002 after 35 years of service. His last assignment was Staff
Engineer for the Advanced Powder Metals Materials Development and Laboratory. In
these 12 years he received 25 US patents for his contributions to the new
technology. He joined Tawas in 2005 at the time when Tawas purchased the Delphi
– Indianapolis analytical laboratory. Dave is the Material Analytical Manager
for Tawas. He is married and has three sons and lives in Pendleton, Indiana.. Discuss the task of quickly moving, setting up, and commissioning an entire laboratory of various instruments, benches, chemicals, and all misc. supplies. Most of the major pieces of analytical instruments varied in weight up to 3000 lbs, age from new to 15 years old and current value from $1000 up to $150,000. The challenge was to move it all ourselves without utilizing (and paying) the equipment manufacturers to move the equipment and to keep from damaging the assets. A few examples of the challenges will be reviewed and a "tour" of the lab and the capabilities will be presented. About our Speaker: Bob Galyen– President – Tawas ICMS. Bob holds a Master’s degree in chemistry with undergraduate degrees in Chemistry and Biology. His professional career spans 28 years. 20 of these were spent with Delco Remy Division of General Motors and 4 with Delphi. Career highlights include:
Bob’s last 4 years have been spent as the managing partner and President of the Tawas ICMS, LLC. Bob is actively involved in Society of Automotive Engineers and the Technology Maintenance Council professional societies. He is an active adult leader in the Boy Scouts of America and a member of Our Lady of Grace church. Bob is currently 50 years old, married and has three children. He resides in and has his company in the city of Noblesville, Indiana. Election of Officers for 2006-2007 at February 15th Meeting
Our current Chair-Elect, Steve Scott, will automatically become the Section Chair for 2006-2007 Chair Chat - by Steve Zylka - February 2006 Feb 1, 2006 The last Leadership Meeting provided more guidance to our Section. We appointed a new Publicity Chair (Allen Fuller), a new Audit Chair (Bob Arnold), a new SMP Chair (immediate past chair starting with the 2006 -2007 year…oh, that would be me), a new Scholarship Chair (Henry Peresie) and confirmed the appointments of Rhonda Goss and Allen Fuller as Vice-Chairs. There are a few upcoming conferences that should be of interest to some. These are: The 14th Annual International Conference on ISO 9000 Taking ISO 9000 to a Higher Level Through Integration, Lean and Six Sigma March 6-7, 2006 Flamingo Hotel Las Vegas Las Vegas, Nevada The International Conference on ISO 9000, organized in conjunction with the American Society for Quality, is the premier source for ISO professionals on the latest information and thinking related to quality management system (QMS) standards and their implementation. Learn from innovative and experienced practitioners of ISO, who will show you how creating strategies involving QMS systems can ultimately affect your organization’s bottom-line results. Make sure to provide priority code MNAAH75 when registering. The 2006 World Conference on Quality and Improvement May 1-3, 2006 Midwest Airlines Center Milwaukee, Wisconsin Continuing ASQ’s 60 years of Quality by delivering vital information for the manufacturing, service and healthcare sector. With session topics, networking sessions and activities, and pre- and post-conference courses, you are guaranteed time and opportunities to learn, meet and mingle with those in your industry and sector. This conference is one of the most exceptional learning and networking events of its kind. Keynote Speakers include: At our last dinner meeting speaker, Rich Johnson, spoke about calibrating the GM system. Calibrating the system might be thought of as auditing the system. Of which, one form is Layered Process Audits. AIAG provides a Layered Process Audit Guideline (CQI-8). It is $50 for non AIAG members or a free downloadable "PDF" file for members. (If you want a hard copy, AIAG will provide one for $10). One item on the LC meeting agenda is determining if there is any interest in doing a pre-clinic or engaging a dinner speaker to discuss layered audits and how to conduct them. Your input is welcomed. For those of you who are using the 5 core tools (these are required by the big 3 auto OEMs). The SPC-3: Statistical Process Control - SPC Second Edition is now available from AIAG. AIAG will begin taking orders for the Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) Fourth Edition beginning Feb. 24. This document defines generic requirements for production part approval, including production and bulk materials. The purpose of PPAP is to provide evidence that all customer engineering design record and specification requirements are properly understood by the organization and that the manufacturing process has the potential to produce product consistently meeting these requirements during an actual production run at the quoted production rate. The other core tools are MSA (Measurement Systems Analysis), APQP (Advanced Product Quality Planning and Control Plan) and FMEA (Potential Failure Mode and Effects Analysis). Remember if your company holds a TS certification and supply to Ford or GM, internal auditors must be trained in the 5 core tools. Some of the other parts manufacturers also require this as part of their Customer Specific Requirements. Here are some of the observances for February: Black History Month (a National observance) I hope to see you at the next dinner meeting which is scheduled for February 15. Visit the ASQ web site for more information. Please…please attend as we will elect officers for the 2006-2007 year. Steve Zylka Post Meeting Follow-up: Sixteen Quality professionals attend the February 2006 meeting to hear Dave Gay speak. Bob Cooper won the Door Prize. The slate of officers was elected.
